Memorial Day Memories – May 24, 2015
Memorial Day weekend was always one of my favorite holidays in the US. Barbecues and walks along the beach. Grilled salmon caesar salad from Edd’s place. That feeling of air circulating around me when I finally got to drive my car with all the windows wide open, the smell of salt water surrounding me, the touch of a warm breeze across the hairs on my arm. My oasis. My oasis. My oasis …
It was the weekend when Westbrook got it’s pulse. Kids on bikes, the smell of cut grass, tourists and sailboats and motorcycles. The beach so near my house, took on another personality – the start of summer. Flowers and flags, sandcastles and picnics. The sound of someone kicking a ball in the distance. That brilliant bright light as the sun bounced off the surface of the water in Long Island Sound. I sit here in Gothenburg today, Sunday May 24th, and fondle my memories of Memorial Days past.
In some ways these memories make me feel a bit melancholy today… but not in a bad way. I’m grateful that I have so many wonderful memories to recall. I sure wish I was back in the US today, to celebrate with family and friends, but instead, I’m pleased to just be able to breath deep and feel all that love.
Happy Memorial Day weekend to all my friends who celebrate.
