I have never been able to follow a routine. I know that setting up a schedule for work and exercise will greatly benefit me but after years of attempting to incorporate some type of structure in my life I’m starting to think routine making is just not for me. I know many great writers have hours set aside (they call it working hours) for composing their articles and works of fiction. So this week I decided that yes – I too will set up a routine (again) and stick to it. It will be good for me. I will accomplish much more during the course of each day and there will be discipline damn it. Yes.
Monday was to be a day of marketing for my business. I even gave the day a name, fun and cute, to better inspire me to stick with my plan. Marketing Monday. Every Monday I will do marketing and outreach. However, I did not market my business or network on Monday. Instead I went into the city with my beau who had a day off from work. Thursday I was to finish reviewing a manuscript and clean up our apartment. I set up a day again for myself – every Thursday would be my housekeeping day. *sigh* I did not clean house nor did I review the manuscript. I spent the day writing – one must write when the writing is hot, right? This weekend, starting on Friday, my plan was to cozy up at home and do a considerable amount of reading (I’m behind), clean the apartment (It’s now quite disheveled) and write.
On Friday morning, a girlfriend suggested that we head out to Göteborg’s Archipelago as it was a beautiful Indian Summer day. Not knowing when Göteborg would again see such a gorgeous day, let alone sunshine, I opted to head out on the ferry and explore and photograph the islands. I believe this to be the correct decision, but alas it marked one more day in which my spontaneous nature once again won out and left the notion of a routine dying in the dust.
I don’t know what the problem is but I’m not about to give up on the idea of setting routines for myself. Today, by god, I’m sticking to my plan. I’m posting to this blog, uploading the photos I just processed from Vrångö, finish reading that manuscript, and cleaning the apartment. So far, so good!
